A stuck roller shutter that does not want to close is much more than just a nuisance. It could leave a window, shopfront, or an entry point to the premises exposed to elements of weather, noise, and unwanted access. Luckily, some minor issues can be performed safely at home.
The key thing is about knowing when to stop. Attempting to force a malfunctioning shutter can quickly convert the minor defect into an expensive repair.
Do an Initial Safety Check
Before triggering the shutter, look at what is happening. Is the shutter completely still? Is the motor making a noise? Is the curtain sitting unevenly?
Inquire about clear impediments across the railroad tracks and bottom edge of the track. Leaves or dirt or small things may also stop moving.
If you see any wires exposed, sparks, burning smells, or burnt components, do not proceed. If it is safe to do so, switch off the appropriate power supply, and call a qualified technician.
Check the Power Supply
Yeah, motorised roller shutters need electricity to work. Now, maybe a simple power interruption has simply caused the shutter to stop.
Verify if adjacent electrical objects are functional. If there is a switch or control for the shutter, verify that it hasn’t been turned off.
Sometimes, weak batteries can also trigger a communication failure in battery-powered controls that can be fixed with replacing them.
By all means, do not remove electrical covers or attempt to fix any internal wiring without the appropriate level of expertise.
Look at the Tracks
Dirty or blocked paths can block the movement of the shutter.
Scan the two sides for visible debris. Remove loose dirt carefully, if within the manufacturer instructions, and only loosening not forcing shutter.
Do not manually press or pull the curtains down if they feel stuck. The shutter is heavy & may injure you or others, and forcing it will damage the motor/guides/slats.
Try the Controls Once More
Occasionally a remote control or wall switch is simply not communicating.
Try the normal operating control one time. If the shutter emits an odd grinding noise, or the shutter button moves slightly and stops, or NOT at all responsive to pressing the shutter button repeatedly.
If the motor is faulty, repeated attempts to start can impose added stress.
When to Choose a Technician Instead
Some faults need professional attention. So, call a technician if:
- Bent or damaged slats
- A shutter sitting at an angle
- Broken guides or brackets
- Unusual motor noises
- Burning smells
- Electrical faults
- A shutter that repeatedly jams
In some cases, a broken roller shutter will have to be replaced with new parts at great expense or motor-related repair operations which include repositioning. Finding the particular fault often needs specialised tools and experience.
Don’t Force a Stuck Shutter
The largest error is to assume a motorised shutter is just like a manual shutter.
If the mechanism jams, pulling on the shutter can tear or jam the curtain or lifting system. Or it will develop and jerk making you have a risk.
If your roller shutters are stuck open, it is usually safer to lock the area down and call for a repair rather than try to fix the mechanism.
Prevent the Problem from Returning
Regular maintenance can spot issues before a shutter gets completed stuck.
Maintain clear tracks and inspect visible components, etc. That sort of thing that typical manufacturer will ask in their maintenance guide. For signs of wear or unusual operation from the shutters, you should get professional servicing done.
